Just as we’ve been making preparations to replace our AC unit, Ms. 1946, we’ve also been preparing to replace the carpet in the theatre.  The Fox Theatre welcomes over 600,000 guests each year and the last time we replaced our carpet was 18 years ago. 18 years times 600,000 guests equals the foot traffic of almost 11 million people.

It will take over 5,000 square yards of carpet to replace all three theatre lobby levels, the Spanish Room, and the aisles in the theatre.

The hard work was done by previous members of the Restoration Department 18 years ago when they found an original piece of carpet and wove what you see today.  The current Restoration Department has worked for over 4 years on this project from conception to installation.  They simply verified with photos and documents to replicate the carpet that is currently being installed.  They made repairs to areas as needed over the years, but a full-out replacement hasn’t happened in 18 years.

The carpet, made from New Zealand sheep’s wool, is naturally fire-retardant.  The yarn was sent to the Bentley Dye Service, Inc. in Calhoun, Georgia to be dyed the precise and historic colors and then sent to Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania to be woven into the carpet that is currently being installed.

The removing and installation of the carpet is done by MEGS Installation and Flooring of Doraville, Georgia and the project will be completed in a total of just two weeks.
