Lighting the Fox Theatre in 1929 was a technological triumph for the day. The original blueprints were very precise, specifying exact wattages for each bulb to ensure that the intended atmosphere of the theatre’s interior architecture was achieved. The original lighting design and fixtures that welcomed visitors on opening day in 1929 are the same that today’s patrons enjoy when they visit the theatre.
Sterling Bronze Company, a competitor of Tiffany’s and later purchased by the Frink Corporation, produced the 371 original light fixtures seen throughout the Fox Theatre. The building’s architects planned and designed many of the specially ordered and custom-made fixtures.
The Fox lighting collection is significant in that it still exists in the building for which it was created. These rare and fragile light fixtures are preserved in place to this day and have been in almost constant use since 1929. Similar fixtures in buildings or theatres have since been demolished.
Sterling Bronze Company also commissioned pieces for the Chicago Opera House, Cleveland Public Library, and other Fox Theatres. Similar collections are held by the Smithsonian and Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Frink Corporation was incorporated into Westinghouse in 1960.
