Eva Fox, wife of movie and theatre mogul William Fox, personally procured the majority of the original furnishings for the Fox Theatre. She described her occupation as Interior Decorater of Theatres in the 1930 census.
Mrs. Fox purchased the furniture from Mandel Brothers of Chicago, a leading retailer of the era, but the pieces were created and manufactured by Ketcham & Rothschild. Founded in 1879, Ketcham &Rothschild was a well-known furniture manufacturer at the time, also based in Chicago.
Ketcham & Rothschild was a family-owned company that employed immigrant craftsmen, skilled in carving, gilding, and upholstery, at a time in American history when Chicago was a center of furniture production. In 2006 Debra Freer and Aaron Appraisal Services assessed the historic Fox furniture collection, revealing for the first time the history behind the important American furniture manufacturer, Ketcham & Rothschild.
The Atlanta Fox furniture collection is the largest collection of original furniture that remains in any of the remaining Fox Theatres coast to coast.
The Fox collection has stood the test of time; with over 300 shows and an estimated 750,000 visitors each year, it is a living testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of Ketcham &Rothschilds’ workforce.
The collection is lovingly maintained by the Restoration Department and treated on-site annually by experienced furniture conservators.
Orientalist nightmare, but...our Orientalist nightmare.
